Surf grew up in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State, the youngest of three. Hiking, waterskiing, snowboarding, karate and school sports were her favorite pastimes.
In the fall of 1998 she started skydiving, by 2000 she moved to Charlotte to pursue skydiving more seriously. During the next 5 years she experimented with skysurfing, a bird-man suit, free flying and a few BASE jumps.
Surf moved to Morehead City in the Fall of 2005 and joined the Sports Center as a member. Soon she was as passionate about working out as she once was about skydiving. In 2007 she decided to turn her passion into a career and obtained a certification in personal fitness training from the American Council on Exercise. She was immediately employed by the Sports Center in the fall of 2007. She has been actively training full-time ever sense, and she continues to develop her knowledge and skills by participating in national workshops.
The enthusiasm she has for physical activity helps her create workouts that are exciting, FUN, and challenging. As a trainer she believes keeping things interesting is one of the most important parts of her job. Weight lifting, Kettlebells and Boot Camps are her favorite tools for training. Surf's sense of adventure, passion for fitness and helping others live longer, healthier lives, makes her a highly effective trainer. Surf provides the motivation needed to push past your comfort level, something difficult to do on your own.
Jen Scalia is a proud mother of three children and is a qualified Certified Personal Trainer/Group Fitness Instructor certified through IFA International in Orlando, Florida. Jen has more than six years of experience in the fitness industry, specializing in post natal workouts, strength training with free weights, core strength workouts, and agility exercises for the older adults. She has a wide variety of experience including sport specific training (football, soccer, and softball), COPD, injury rehab, and lap band patients.
Having a cardio only workout for years with no significant results, she began weight training and within weeks saw her body transform. She was then inspired to specialize in post partum fitness with weight training. Her many years of strength training have helped her develop a safe systematic approach to post partum rehabilitation. Her life experiences help her train with a positive and enthusiastic attitude creating an atmosphere that is fun and exciting! Her goal is to help women not only regain their prenatal fitness levels but surpass them. She hopes to motivate all new moms and lead their families to a healthier lifestyle.
Megan Mizzell was born and raised in the small town of Vienna, IL. She has been heavily involved in sports throughout her life such softball, basketball, track and golf. While in High School Megan was named a three time All-Conference selection, as well as the 2002-2003 Southern Illinoisan Softball Player of the Year. Megan’s first two years of college were spent at the University of Tennessee at Martin where she played Division I softball. In 2005 Megan transferred to East Carolina University and graduated with a degree in Exercise and Sports Science, specializing in Health and Fitness.
Megan was first introduced to our club in the summer of 2007 as an intern. After graduation Megan was hired full time. She has experience in working with all age groups as well as training a wide variety of clients. Specialties include athletes, injury rehab, postnatal and weight management. Megan says that over time she has learned that no two people are exactly the same and each need a workout tailored to their fitness level and goals. She is eager to help you undertake, as well as maintain, a healthy lifestyle.
Matt grew up in Durham, North Carolina. He played baseball and basketball all through his time in elementary, middle and high school. At Northern Durham he was named all conference in baseball for two years and was the MVP his senior year. Matt had his own trainer which helped him tremendously with his athletic development. This experience led him toward becoming a personal trainer.
He graduated from East Carolina in 2009 with a degree in Exercise and Sport Science with a concentration in Health and Fitness. He first came to the Sports Center as an intern in 2009 while completing his degree from ECU. He has experience in working with all age groups such as teenage athletes that want speed and agility and older adults that want to lose weight and gain strength. He is motivated to help everyone meet their goals.
